It was originally 6" X 4" but silk will shrink some with age. This flag was never applied to a jacket. I got several boxes of these and other identification flags and armbands in the late 1970's. The silk flags were used very early in the war for the invasion of North Africa.
I have had these both by themselves and on white wool felt armbands. Due to shortages of silk, flags were made of printed cotton and later by D-Day on printed oilcloth. I had a 1st ID vet who landed in North Africa for Operation Torch tell me that they received boxes of these flag on the sticks and were ordered to take them off the sticks and sew them onto their right sleeves to identify themselves as Americans to the populace and Vichy French Army. The item "Original Brassard WWII Invasion Armband US 48 Star Flag Army Paratrooper USA" is in sale since Monday, December 9, 2019.
